This Mystery Sub-Genre is Peak

There’s this sub-genre in anime that I’ve been very obsessed with. It’s a pattern that I’ve taken note of with each passing season.

Animes such as GoSick, In/Spectre, and Dark Gathering are shows that follows a distinct pattern of a highly intelligent girl with a certain kind of quirk and a boy metaphorically lead by a leash  to solve mysteries. This does not explain anything about me in any way.

The main appeal to this sub-genre is often carried by the mysteries that are to be solved by the characters in their dynamic. Gosick aired in 2011 and I still remember some episodes fondly.

This one anime, Undead Murder Farce, took me by surprise. The introduction sets up a brief background on the characters and how they meet. When episode two comes around I get whiplashed by, what I personally felt, a shift in direction where the duo + maid have been solving mysteries along the way. Then I knew that this anime was going to be one of those genres.
